Join us for a zazen (seated Zen meditation) experience at Nagaoka Zen Juku, a public interest incorporated foundation in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture.
Schedule
Saturday, October 24
9:00 a.m. — Meet at Nagaoka Zen Juku
A 9:30 a.m. arrival can also be accommodated.
If you are arriving by car, please use the adjacent Nagaoka Park parking lot.
If you are travelling by train, the venue is approximately 1 km from Hankyu Nagaoka-Tenjin Station (a 15-minute walk).
9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon — Introduction and zazen experience
The session will begin with an explanation of the basics of zazen, followed by a meditation experience in the meditation hall.
Nagaoka Zen Juku is not a temple or a monastic training centre, so you are welcome to sit in a comfortable, ordinary cross-legged position. If sitting cross-legged is difficult, a folding chair can be provided. Please let us know in advance.
The traditional zazen postures are:
- Full lotus (kekkafuza): Each foot rests on the opposite thigh. This is a traditional, highly stable posture, best suited to experienced practitioners with flexible hips.
- Half lotus (hankafuza): One foot rests on the opposite thigh. This is a standard posture often taught to beginners at Zen temples.
While these postures are ideal if comfortable, participants are encouraged to experience zazen within their own physical limits, without forcing any posture.
Around 12:00 noon — Session concludes
